Josh Rubin - Distractions - Week 11
The last push of the semester is coming up, so it is extremely important to focus and study to get good grades for midterms. While studying, it can be tempting to check your phone for just a minute, but the temptation causes us to get sucked into social media and other distractions, which causes us to waste time rather than study. So, as I study for my midterms this weekend, here are my top distractions to avoid.
YouTube. There is always one more clickbaity video to watch. Then once you watch that, there's always another video queued up with an exciting title and thumbnail. As a result of what you click on, the algorithm knows what videos you would be interested in. YouTube is a big attention grabber.
TikTok. TikTok may be the biggest distraction of all time. The TikTok app is a social media platform that lets you post short videos and scroll through them as if they're endless. TikToks range from pranks to advertisements and funny dances.
Instagram. The gram. It is easy to get caught up in other people's lives. No one looks like they are studying. Everyone looks like they are having a good time. Nothing other than fun is happening on Instagram, making you think you don't need to study, either. I know - I do.
Music. Many people say that music helps them to study and focus. I do not find this to be true. Music causes me to drift off and think about anything other than studying. Sometimes I start singing along, and then I lose my train of thought and get off track with what I should be doing.
My room. I have a lot of stuff in my room that is interesting to me. For example, I have many photography books I like to flip through and think about my next adventure in nature.
Snapchat. Snap. Snapchat is the leading cause for me to put my phone on do not disturb as the group chats never stop. The ding that indicates that a new snap has come in is a huge distraction for me as I am always curious as to what it might say. I know in my heart that it really says nothing - or maybe some of my friends are complaining about the work we all have. Nothing constructive comes from snapping.
The refrigerator. It is always a great way for me to distract myself. All of a sudden, I will get hungry. I will consider which type of ice cream I could have. Maybe a cookie would be good right about now. If I am lucky, there will be some cake. I can always look to see what choices I have which of course is a big distraction and time waster although I do need the calories.
As you can see, there are many ways to get distracted. I came up with these off the top of my head, but I bet there are many more ways to procrastinate and still look like I am doing something. When I look at the clock, I am amazed to see how much time has gone by with so little done. This is when I think to myself that I really should have gone to the library. I am guessing it would be harder to be distracted at the library, but really it is just a guess. I could find ways to waste time anywhere. I just need to do my work.
What is a leading cause of you getting off task from what you are supposed to do?
