Sophia Bilu Week 8: You Should Totally Read More

Honestly, I don’t feel like I’ve been reading nearly as much as I used to. Now, in part, this is because I used to read an insane amount. I would spend hours and hours pouring over fantasy, fiction, YA, and anything I could get my hands on. Reading gave me an escape and a pastime when I desperately needed both. Now that I’m older, I have a lot of things that distract me from my old passion for reading. Over the last few years, I’ve developed a social life and workload that take up much of the free time I previously had. Additionally, finding books that continued to interest me became a huge struggle.

Another huge reason I started to read less was social media. Instead of spending my time lost in a book, I would find myself lost in TikTok. Social media became a new way to escape and distract myself while still feeling like I was connecting socially. In reality, that was only a feeling, and I would spend just as much time on my phone not talking as I had spent losing myself in books. Deleting social media has helped me rediscover my passion for reading because now when finding free time, I open up a book instead of picking up my phone to scroll through some app.

Personally, reading books is much more productive than social media. While social media can sometimes bring up thought-provoking subjects and encourage creativity, reading a book makes me think hard about its contents. As I am reading a book, not only am I thinking about and understanding the plot, I am picking up on new language and understanding new concepts. It's even possible for me to do all three things at once! Even though that sounds like a lot of work, reading is one of the most relaxing things I do. It provides a place of refuge, a place where events can not touch me in any way but emotionally. This can even provide a good venting space for real-life emotions.

I am happy that I have found a way to reconnect with my passion for reading, and I hope this can help someone else to rediscover their love of books.

  1. I find reading a great escape as well. I can relate with reading more as a child and being more social now, however I try to make time for both.
