Rebecca Week 9 - An Update on the World Cup
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about soccer and mentioned the World Cup. If you haven’t been paying attention or seen my last blog, this year, it is controversially being hosted by Qatar.
The kick-off game was between Qatar and Ecuador, with a 2-0 win going to Ecuador. The most shocking game personally was Argentina’s loss against Saudi Arabia. Argentina, Brazil, Germany, and Italy are known to be some of the best teams; this year, Germany qualified in 11th place, and Italy didn’t even qualify.
In 2009, Qatar and four other countries bid to host the world cup; in 2010, FIFA chose Qatar to be the 2022 host. The win by Qatar alone caused doubts in FIFA with accusations of corruption. Once it was decided, Qatar brought in foreign workers to build the stadiums, leading to suspected thousands of deaths caused by heatstroke and improper work conditions. This number is misleading, and more information can be found here.

Now, with tourists and fans traveling to Qatar in the Middle East, people of many cultures need to follow their rules. Two days before the opening match, they altered the rule designating only certain areas to be alcohol-allowed zones, with the rest of the stadium being alcohol-free. Additionally, people must cover up and are banned from wearing political messages.
The next World Cup in 2026 will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the US in multiple cities. My parents and I are hoping to watch at least one of the games in person at the stadium, and I am thinking about how to get my cousins to join us. Even though I’m not very into watching sports, it’s a part of our familial culture. When they aired the opening ceremony, my mom and I were texting my uncle about the different presentations. We felt terrible for Qatar after they lost their first match and were stunned that Argentina lost its first game. Do you share a group activity or interest with your family?
One of my family's good friends is actually in Qatar right now for the World Cup. He is super into soccer and I believe he grew up playing it in Uruguay.
