Rebecca Week 8 - Tech Dependency

Technology has majorly advanced in the past twenty or so years creating a different world for us to grow up in. Unfortunately, this week, my wifi broke. I got home late after our first soccer game, dreading being tired, doing homework, and attending a zoom meeting, only to discover that it would be even more miserable because of our Wi-Fi. Normally it works well, and I have no problems, but I, like many other people I know, always struggle with failing technology.
I messaged the person in charge of the zoom meeting that I would not be able to join, and she asked me to join from my phone. Normally I would automatically use this as a solution, but there is very little phone signal in about a two-mile radius around my house. I considered my options, including going to a friend’s house or a Starbucks, although by this time, it was almost 7:00 PM and a relatively non-crucial meeting. Following her instructions, I sat on my phone in the hour-long zoom meeting, accepting that I would disconnect every few minutes.

After the meeting ended, I realized my dad was on the phone with our service provider trying to fix this issue. I was bothered that I couldn’t complete some of my homework earlier than it was due, yet my dad’s whole job requires him to have an internet connection. The loss of Wi-Fi connection made our house super hot because we have a smart thermostat that uses the internet. Luckily, they fixed the internet halfway through today. Still, it made me realize how problematic it is that we’ve grown dependent on something as delicate and immaterial as wifi.

What do you think about the reliance we have on technology?

Comments

  1. I hate when Wifi goes down. I think that we are very reliant on technology but that has been true since the invention of the wheel. Having Wifi is important to me because without it I couldn't watch entertainment or play Apex Legends!
