Joshua Grynbaum Week 8: Discrete Deadpool
This past weekend, a close friend of mine and a few others decided to watch the popular film Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds himself. We were looking for an action-packed movie that also appealed to our humor, and this movie was the best of both worlds. Deadpool is a “superhero” that doesn’t want to take on the responsibility of being a superhero, so instead, he walks around doing his own thing and following his own rules; living life like a badass. The reason he is considered a superhero is that he was tortured and experimented on, which ultimately led to him becoming immortal and having the ability to regenerate any damaged part of his body, while also destroying the look of his face. Ever since that event, he has had the urge to get revenge on “Francis” and make him pay for what he has done to him. This also indirectly ended the loving relationship Deadpool had with this lovely woman named Vanessa. Deadpool planned to marry Vanessa and even proposed to her, but because of the effects of the experiment, he was too self-conscious about approaching her and just decide to save her the trouble of having to see him every day… This does turn around eventually, but you’ll have to watch the movie to find out.
My personal favorite part of the film is after coming out of a brutal fight, Deadpool needs some time to regenerate his lost arm, and in the process, he uses his “baby hand” to do everyday tasks. He also makes jokes about the “baby hand” and shares them with his “blind accomplice”. This accomplice is an elderly woman who shared many of the same characteristics as Deadpool which is shown throughout their relationship. These two seem perfect for each other, even though they have numerous differences, which is what makes them work so well. Another clever tactic that is used throughout the movie is the use of the fourth wall. There are many instances where Deadpool breaks the fourth wall, and even outright talks about breaking it, which really adds an additional layer to this film’s complexity and humor. I honestly enjoyed just about every aspect of this movie, and would really recommend it to anyone looking for a funny and action-packed experience. Overall, I would rate this movie a solid 8.5/10.
Good review, I saw Deadpool a while ago and I remember liking it a lot.
