Joshua Grynbaum Week 6: The Tefillin Trauma

If you were to ask any Donna Klein Jewish Academy high school boy about what we need most, a common answer may new pairs of Tefillin. Each day at around 8:30 AM, a majority of the high school students embark on a spiritual journey of connecting to G-d through prayer. A way some of these high school boys enhance their prayer is putting on Tefillin daily. As of now, we have been using the same pairs of Tefillin each day for several years and many of them have broke, been misarranged, or worn down. Although it is great to see such enthusiasm for prayer among us High School boys, the reality is that no one knows how much longer these pairs of Tefillin will last, especially with the exponential increase of new students each year. The only way to keep up with this level of spiritual participation is to acquire a greater amount of Tefillin to satisfy all that desire to connect on a deeper level with G-d. According to the Sefer Torah in Devarim 6:5, “you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Wrapping Tefillin daily compliments this notion perfectly. Additionally, it would allow the boys who bring their own Tefillin due to the poor shape of the ones we currently have, to not have to bring their own pair and carry it around with them each day. Rabbi Nachman of Breslov claims that the key to happiness is that “a person has to be very determined and put all his strength into being nothing but happy at all times,” and by having a new supply of Tefillin, we students would be filled with joy and have the incentive to be on a higher level of happiness.

  3. I completely agree! I put Tefilin on every single day but with the Teflilin being worn out, it just doesn't feel right and I find myself uncomfortable with it at times.
