Josh Rubin - Week 8 - Getting the perfect shot

Over the past few years, my passion for photography has grown tremendously. I take weekly trips to different Florida wetlands in an attempt to get the perfect photo of a moment in time. Wildlife photography takes lots of patience, making it a great activity after a long, stressful week. Being able to get some fresh air and disconnect from my phone for a couple of hours is nice. I definitely recommend getting outside during the week and maybe even taking a camera with you. There is a great chance you will see something remarkable.

One thing that all of my award-winning photos have in common is that they are all special moments in time captured. Photographing the right moment is vital to creating an award-winning image, and of course, other technical factors also play a role. One story I'll tell in this blog is about a family of baby Egrets. I woke up early in the morning to photograph sunrise activity at the wetlands. My usual time to take pictures is during golden hour, so I wanted to see what was different about the morning birds' activity. I arrived at the wetlands at 6:30 and began my hike. I was able to find a Great Egret perched on a tree branch. I watched it for a while until it flew off to another tree. After looking closely at where it had landed, I realized it landed at its nest with three baby birds. It was bringing back breakfast for baby egrets. It was so surprising watching as the mother bird regurgitated a lizard for her babies to eat. The baby birds made lots of noise and began peaking at each other as they fought for the lizard. In the end, one of the birds got the lizard and gobbled it down. I was able to capture all of it! It was so exciting because I knew that one of the photos would be amazing and potentially win a contest.

A few months later, in July this year, the photo placed 2nd in the Florida Birding Fest Contest. As soon as I heard the news, I immediately thought back to the time I went and took the photo. A big part of getting a good wildlife photo is being in the right place at the right time. I was at the wetlands in the right spot at the right time to watch the Egret family.

I hope this inspires you to go outside and keep an eye out for the wildlife around you. You may see something interesting! What's the coolest thing in nature you have ever seen?
