Jonathan Hus Week 9 - Medical Mission

This Wednesday, I am going to Guatemala with my family, and one of my elementary school friends named Jordan and his dad. Our families have been close for more than a decade and I am super stoked to go on this trip with them. We are traveling in order to volunteer at a free clinic and give the kids and families access to top-of-the-line healthcare. Jordan’s dad is a pediatric physician and my dad is a Trauma and Critical Care surgeon. This is very useful in that both of their fields will most likely apply to the clinic we are volunteering at. We may see things from common colds to having to remove a foreign object that is causing an infection. We are also going to be doing minor procedures, giving shots, and teaching general hygiene to children. This mission trip is run by International Medical Relief and I was about to go on a mission trip with them last year to Jamaica but unfortunately had to cancel a few days before. My brother, however, participated in one of these trips to Peru over the summer and he said it was an awesome experience. The clinic work will be on Thursday and Friday and I come back home on Saturday. Additionally, I am really looking forward to this trip as I have experience working for a free clinic here in Boca. I have learned how to give injections, file paperwork, help draw blood, and call in patients. All these skills will apply to the clinic in Guatemala. My only concern is that I don't know enough Spanish but the company that runs the clinic does provide translators. I hope this experience will allow me to widen my understanding of the system of healthcare in other parts of the world and leave me with a feeling of satisfaction. I will be sure to let you guys know how the trip goes, and let me know what types of things you think I will see during my time there.

  1. That sounds like an awesome experience. Not only will it give you insight in to the medical problems of another area of the world, but it will give you great experience for when you are in medical school.
