Johnys Week 8: Revisiting the King of Pop
Michael Jackson is considered one of the greatest musicians of all time. He’s a legend and an all-time great that left an incredible impact on the culture of music. My mom happens to be a die-hard Michael Jackson fan and had played his music nonstop while I was growing up. Every day on the way to, and back from school, all I would hear is Michael Jackson. However, he suddenly got out of my mom's rotation and left me hardly hearing his songs for a long period of time. This was until last week, when I suddenly found myself revisiting his music and falling absolutely in love with it once again.
Michael Jackson definitely had a controversial career as although he had an amazing, loyal fanbase, with this massive audience came a lot of hate. It’s easy to overlook his impact on music because of all the negative things he may have been known for, however, the music will always speak for itself. His entire catalog is loaded with timeless classics. Records like Billie Jean, Bad, Smooth Criminal, Beat it, Dirty Diana, Man in the Mirror, and the list goes on. When these songs came out, people were obsessed; each song held its own captivating moment in music. His concerts would be completely sold out, stadiums were filled and the energy they had was unmatched. Michael Jackson's “Thriller” is also the highest-selling album of all time, in which every one of the 9 songs was a hit. As I revisit the album, I find it difficult to choose a song because each one brings a different, yet exciting energy. I prefer to listen to the album from start to finish as that way I get the full feel of the album in the order that MJ specifically put it in. He even invented the concept of “Music Videos,” which is now a staple in the music industry. When you listen to his music, it’s clear that Michael Jackson is always communicating a message and using music to express himself. Meanwhile, his songs get people in complete dance mode. He’s truly one of the most inspiring and sonically incredible artists of all time, and I'm glad I found myself listening to his music once again.
Are you a Michael Jackson fan?
Michael Jackson has some great songs. I was fortunate to see his Vegas show a few years ago with him as a hologram/animatronic which was really cool. If you are ever in Vegas, you should go and see it.
