Week 9
Netflix's Peaky Blinders:
Set after the events of the first World War I, Netflix's Peaky Blinders explores the lives of the Shelby family, Birmingham's foremost gangster group and up-and-coming leaders in the illegal gambling space. Fixing horse races for a living, the family's violent history during the First World War aids them in their ruthlessness towards people who get in their way. Among this group of rebels stands Thomas Shelby, a battle-hardened and straight-faced leader. The main protagonist of the show, Thomas struggles with the burdens of handling his family's illegal gambling business while also wanting to venture into cleaner business practices. On a personal front, he struggles with holding together his broken family who experienced the horrors of World War I, such as his brother Arthur succumbing to alcohol to aid in his PTSD. Over the course of six seasons, Peaky Blinders starts off exploring the Shelby family while they are not yet very wealthy, but do have considerable local control in Birmingham. As the seasons progress, the family business becomes, bigger, wealthier, and more problematic. Even as the family becomes more wealthy, everyone remains under the watchful and patriarchal eye of Thomas Shelby. No one is allowed to do anything without his oversite or permission, which leads to lots of resentment within the family. However, all the family members understand that Thomas is the one of the wisest of them all, and if their matriarch, his aunt Polly, approves, than something must really stand. Although after watching the show one might look at it as every season a problem Thomas and the rest of his family have to face, more deeply it is a show about Thomas trying to protect his family and give them influence they never had as a poorer family with roots in Birmingham. Have you ever seen the show or plan on watching it?
