Eva Week 9- People Watching at the Airport
I am currently at the Palm Beach International Airport waiting to board my delayed flight to Philadelphia. I love paying attention to the people around me and thinking about who they are and what their life is like.
There's a girl sitting across from me, probably in her late teens or early twenties. She is wearing the classic teen girl airport fit: sweatpants, a sweatshirt, socks, and slides. She is, as most teenagers are, intensely focused on her phone, an iPhone 12 with a lavender phone case, which lays in her right hand. The phone is most likely on Instagram based on her swiping ratio. A Grande Starbucks drink fills her left hand; it’s one of those strawberry pink, solely aesthetic drinks. She has a light purple manicure and slightly too obvious fake eyelashes. I assume she is traveling alone, possibly a college student visiting her family for Thanksgiving.
An older couple is sitting next to her, maybe around their late 70s or early 80s, definitely Jews. They are splitting what appears to be one of those pre-packaged tuna wraps from the over priced general store. The wrap is not very appealing to me, especially since it’s only 4:12PM. It makes me wonder what their meal serves as, an early dinner? The man has the newest version Apple Watch and both his and his wife’s phones are plugged into the shared seat outlet. Although their iPhone generations are only iPhone X’s, they both have the newest version of apple chargers, the one that uses the USBC port and the brick that looks big enough for an iPad. The wife, currently on the phone, is complaining about her flight’s delay. As the Jewish mother instinct kicks in (still a racial profiling), she is telling what I assume to be her daughter that “he’s a nice man and [she] only wants her to find somebody.” Oh man, not that pressure to get married. Hopefully their flight leaves soon.
There is a second older (but not as old) couple sitting to the right of me- the type that live on the beach. They’ve got that tan that doesn't go away after a few months of staying inside. The man is in sandals, a dry fit long sleeve shirt, and dry fit swim-looking shorts. He has a woven necklace with a generic looking shark tooth. His wife’s outfit is not as notable- leggings and an athletic-looking shirt. To this point, I have left out the best part about them: Jack. Jack, of course, is their scrawny little dog they keep talking to in a baby voice. Apparently he has a big trip to look forward to visiting his “girlfriend” and adapting to the cold weather he’s not used to. He has a service dog jacket, but by the looks of it, there is no way he is actually a service dog. He keeps running around and the husband has to repeatedly tell him to leave room for people to walk through the aisle. One more tidbit I’d like to mention: they both have the plastic cups of beer, almost completely empty now. I find this a questionable choice for airplane flyers; I have never understood why people feel the need to grab a drink before catching their flight.
At the airport, I am just one of many with my own agenda and life goals.
I don't think I have ever people-watched so intently, but it always serves as a weird reminder that you are just one of the billions of people on Earth. Little things people do always remind me that people can be so amusing. Also, I love Jack with his Florida Man father; I think he's a dog just living his dream.
ReplyDeleteThis is the most absurd and ridiculous blog I have seen. I love it! The way you were able to determine the activity the girl is doing on her phone by the way she is swiping is really funny to me. Do her purple nails match the phone case? Also strawberry drinks are not just for the aesthetic, I like strawberries.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the dog Jack has a girlfriend! This reminds me of my family at the airport when we bring our miniature yorkies.
