Ava Week 8 - A Fun Ceramics Field Trip
A Fun Ceramics Field Trip
Yesterday I went on a fun ceramics trip to the Armory Art Center to raku fire ceramics pieces. Thankfully Vic, who is in my ceramics class, was there to keep me company. After a nice 45-minute bus ride, we arrived and began to look around the place, observing the unique and intriguing artwork. There was ceramics art I had never come across before, such as sculptural objects in random, abstract shapes. Something I found interesting was the 3D-printed artwork, in which pieces were literally printed out of clay. Vic and I found ourselves very hungry pretty short into the field trip, and it was a bit of a struggle for us to wait for lunchtime. Making jokes and goofing around helped pass the time. After a while of looking around, we got to actually raku fire our pieces. I brought a turtle I hand-built, which I am planning on entering into my AP Ceramics portfolio. The actual raku firing was more difficult than I had in mind. First, I had to put on a huge fire-protecting coat along with very thick gloves and a face shield. The coat was quite big and made me feel like Hagrid. The ceramics worker opened the kiln (where ceramics is fired) and I could feel the heavy heat of the fire on my face. After I got a hold of my turtle with gripping thongs and placed it in a bucket with newspaper coiled inside, the bucket set on fire (this is supposed to happen). Vic then quickly placed the lid onto my bucket. To our great relief, we were free to go eat lunch when Vic was done with her turn. I felt pretty bad for her considering her lunch was a cold and stale grilled cheese sandwich. Thankfully, she had Skinny Pop as well as potato chips provided by Mrs. Hasson. After a nice lunch, our pieces were ready to come out of the kiln. My turtle and Vic's cup came out black with an iridescent shine. It was really disappointing when we found out raku-fired cups couldn't be used for drinking, as Vic was planning on using hers as her breakfast apple juice cup. Finally, it was time to head back to school. Completely exhausted, Vic and I napped almost the whole ride back. Overall, it was a very cool ceramics experience and I can't wait to present my turtle to the AP judges.
