Jonathan Hus Week 5 - The Clinical Congress Conference
My dad approached me around a year and a half ago with a problem he was encountering at work that he and other physicians alike were facing. Silver Containing Wound dressings are a very effective modem in killing bacteria and healing wounds. There are many different brands available for use, however, these doctors don't really know which one is most effective. Each company likes to promote and say that theirs is the best however they never provide actual data to prove this to be true. So, I decided to take it upon myself and compare seven different Silver Containing Wound Dressings(SCWDs) in an in vitro model. An in vitro wound model is a modem of testing and conducting research outside of a real body while in vivo is research conducted in or on a real specimen. Fast forwarding to this week, I flew to San Diego as I was accepted by the American College of Surgeons to present my findings at their annual clinical congress. When I arrived in the morning at the convention center, I was blown away by the number of physicians roaming the halls all around me. I suddenly realized how real it all was and that the research in which I conducted was deemed important to present to physicians from around the world. Although I was prepared and recited my presentation countless times leading up to the big day, I found myself growing more and more nervous as my time approached. Eventually, on Wednesday the 19th, I was called up in front of around 100 people to present my work. Before me, were two med students from Harvard, and after me, was a resident from Yale. Smushed in between the two, was Jonathan Hus from Donna Klein Jewish Academy. I stood up and walked to the podium as I felt my heart beating out of my chest and as if I was going to throw up. However, I pushed through and began speaking. By the end of the presentation, I was met with applause and a couple of questions. I was so relieved that everyone liked my presentation and that I even made it through after working hard for so many months. My lesson here is just to show that hard work pays off and if you are really passionate about something who knows where it will take you. What are you guys really passionate about doing or learning?
Great job Jonathan. This is truly inspiring. You were up there with the big guys. Keep up the good work!
