Johnys Week 1: A Breaking Bad Review
With the development of streaming services, modern TV has generated some of the most well-produced, written, and performed television the world has seen. I’ve seen dozens of shows, some weren’t the greatest, and some were phenomenal, however, there is only one that I can genuinely admit to being the best, and that is Breaking Bad. From the writing, performance, cinematography, direction, and music, the show was crafted to perfection.
The plot is centered around a character known as Walter White; a married father with a single son who works as a high school chemistry teacher and had just discovered that he was diagnosed with lung cancer, leading him to the decision to start cooking meth. He does this with a partner, one of his ex-students, Jesse Pinkman, who was ultimately a junkie. At first, Walter may seem to appear as a simple man, but the complexity of his history and personality leads to a spectacular, yet horrifying development in his character. Bryan Cranston who plays Walter did a beyond outstanding portrayal of the character. Not to mention, the chemistry between Walter and Jesse (played by Aaron Paul) made such a captivating relationship. Other characters in the show such as Gus Fring (my personal favorite), Skylar White, Saul Goodman, and Hank Schrader were essential support to the plot and such extraordinary characters on their own. Saul got so much love that the producers decided to create an incredible spin-off show for him called “Better Call Saul.” Vince Gilligan, the main writer of the show was able to create a world where as bad as everyone is, you still want to root for these characters. It’s what creates constant tension, and makes the show that more captivating. I like to describe the plot as a beautiful, yet twisted work of art.
Overall, Breaking Bad is in a league of its own and makes an absolute must-watch. 10/10.
