Rebecca Week 4 - Robotics
Robotics is an amazing hobby to have. Each component brings fun, productive
challenges that add to the final project. It includes digital 3D designing or
computer-aided design (CAD), programming, fabrication, building, and robot
driving.
I started the robotics journey in the summer after third grade and realized how
entertaining it was then.
FIRST Robotics has, in
my opinion, pretty much created the perfect system. The organization has three
main competitions, FIRST Lego League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), and
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC).
As a third grader, you can’t jump into working on big 100-pound metal robots,
but you can start learning on little lego robots. That’s the first level of
FIRST Robotics. It includes a set of missions for the teams to complete before
arriving at the tournament, a yearly themed and community-aware research
project, and core values. The legos teach engineering, the research project
strengthens presentations and work skills, and the core values inspire kids to
be “gracious professionals.” Together, these branches of FIRST Lego League all improve important life
skills like teamwork.
FTC is a mini version of FRC with little challenges that change yearly. I never participated in FTC because I decided to go from FLL to FRC. FRC is amazing; we work on giant robots with self-aiming turrets, climbing arms, and even jumping abilities. By pre-planning our robot builds in the design software, we can make the robots appear much more professional and even 3D print some parts. This hands-on experience really presents the opportunity to learn about engineering.
Sidenote: I designed a new base for our brand-new robot that I worked on over the summer. This robot will be run on “swerve drive” instead of the usual tank drive. We received the plate I had CADed today, which luckily fit perfectly with the rest of the assembly. Here are two extra videos of our robot that I really like.
Do you have a fun hobby like robotics?

Robotics sounds like an awesome hobby!! FIRST especially sounds great!
