Joshua’s an Island boy - Week 1

As my sophomore year at Donna Klein began to end, I became more excited for the summer. Not only was I looking forward to the incredible photo opportunities, but I was also excited to see my brother in South America and the Galapagos Islands. The remote islands on the world's equator are home to some of the world's most exotic wildlife. Humans inhabit only a total of three percent of the islands, while the other 97 percent are protected as a national park. The National Park set a list of strict rules for visitors to follow such as staying within boundaries and not bringing food onto some islands. It's a great thing to enforce these rules or else the wildlife would be affected.

Due to such a low human settlement percentage, the wildlife isn't so used to seeing humans; therefore, they are curious. While touring the Islands, you can get up close and personal with the wildlife making for some incredible encounters and photo opportunities. The animals own the islands, and it's not a rare scene to have a finch land on your head or a Sea Lion charging at you while eating lunch. The animals make sure you know who's boss.

Snorkeling in the Galapagos is truly magnificent. You can swim in crystal clear waters alongside Octopuses, Sharks, Turtles, Sea Lions, Penguins, Iguanas, and more! The water is pretty cold, so make sure you bring a wetsuit. This summer was full of adventure, and it was nice to be in a place where the animals were respected. I definitely recommend traveling to the islands at one point during your life. It's not as far as you might think!

  4. This sounds awesome! I've been to South America too many times to count, but mainly to more populated areas. It's really nice to hear that they care about the wildlife in the Galapagos.
