Johny Week 4: The Power of the Gym
Growing up, I’ve always been the skinny one in my family. Out of my siblings, parents, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc, I was always known as the skinniest boy. This was not a fun title to hold, especially when it’s brought up at every Russian holiday gathering I have with family. Up until my freshman year of high school, I ignored the comments and chose not to make a change. Once I noticed all my friends starting to go to the gym, I decided to try it out. I will never forget that first workout that I had, as that was the day I discovered a new love for the gym.
My original intention with the gym was just to gain weight. With time, this one intention has branched out to so many others. It doesn’t just help me with my body, but it helps me with my mental health. Every time I work out, I'm in a zone of presence, where I can escape my problems and do something for the well-being of myself. After a whole day of working, I can take an hour and use it to reward myself. I believe the gym setting defines growth as everyone is there for the same reason, to improve themselves. Keeping up with the gym is by no means easy, as it requires commitment, discipline, passion, and responsibility. However, those who keep up with it don’t only have amazing, healthy, and strong bodies, but they have a strong growth mentality. I’ve met some of my closest friends in the gym because they have this like-minded mindset. There is always room for improvement, and I really believe in this perspective on life. On top of this, meeting people who went through the same journey that you’re currently on has really inspired me to keep going. The Gym community is amazingly positive and encouraging which even as a skinny kid, kept me comfortable early on in my journey. Even with moving and all the extra factors that have interfered with my weight-lifting journey, I’ve kept going and have seen incredible changes in my body. Every time I look in the mirror I feel pride within myself for how far I’ve come, but also the part that tells me to keep going as there’s lots of room to continue improving. I can admit that working out is the best thing that I have done for myself, and am going to continue getting that daily pump for the rest of my life.
Do you go to the gym?
It's interesting to see your perspective on going to the gym, especially as an avid gym-hater myself. Workouts always boost the spirits though :) Endorphins
ReplyDeleteI do not go to the gym because I don't have enough motivation or in many cases time for the gym.
