Running is Hard, so Why Do I Love It?

I have enjoyed running since fifth grade. There is no activity that gives me a feeling of exhilaration as much as running. Last Thursday, I had my first cross-country practice of the year. I walked into practice with a feeling of ease, knowing I had been practicing for this all summer. It was definitely a surprise when I felt close to dying during the practice. My lungs felt like they were going to explode but I forced myself to go as much as I can. The workout following the run was a killer as well. It was a relief when I was finally going home to my bed.

When I got home I realized the practice had been so difficult compared to my daily summer runs because first of all, they were fifteen minutes rather than two hours. But also, during summer I was getting a full nine hours of sleep, whereas the night before practice I had gotten only five. A good amount of sleep is essential to a lengthy workout, as well as some other things. If you don’t have a good playlist to listen to to keep you running, you might as well not go at all. Furthermore, have a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and energy drink especially if you’re low on sleep. The last, but certainly not least, essential thing for cross country is self-motivation. Tell yourself to keep going! The more practices I go to, the more I realize if you put your mind to it, you can do it. You won’t regret it at the end when you get that feeling of accomplishment. I know it doesn’t exactly sound super fun, but if you do decide to go on a run, these are some things to consider. Have you ever motivated yourself to do a sport?

  1. I've only motivated myself to run a few times in my life. I have a lot of respect for people who have a running routine. I always give up within the first hour of thinking that I should start running.

    1. Thank you, Miah. It took me awhile to become persistent with it; motivation is key.

  2. Thats a great question Ava; over the years I have played many sports but have only stuck with a couple. I used to play lacrosse but after moving to Florida I stopped. Right now I have a lot of motivation to improve my golf game.
