Aaron Mibab 2: Led Lights
Ever since Covid, I have had an LED light strip in my room. These lights are so useful and have really changed my life. I recommend that everyone has some LED lights, and more specifically smart lights (I recommend LIFX and can expand more in person on the choices).
The lights have fundamentally changed how I go to sleep. Due to my (often chronic) time indoors, I have not really “seen the sun” enough (quote from my mother). Through a different interpretation, she makes an interesting point. Humans have relied on the sun for the passage of time, to tell us when to wake up and when to go to sleep. We have since evolved to use clocks (that originally relied on the sun). Although we have clocks, the sun changes our behavior. As it slowly sets, it tells our bodies to go to bed. Since I am indoors so much (and have blackout curtains), I do not see the sun setting. Could this be the fault of my terrible gaming-induced sleep schedule? Irrelevant point (translation: yes). I have my lights change to the warmest color (to simulate the setting sun) and then have them slowly turn off for an amount of time of my choosing. I constantly fall asleep using the lights as a guide for my body to fall asleep.
LED lights are also incredibly convenient, especially for waking up. Whenever I want to turn on/off the lights I just say/yell (or whisper depending on the time) “Alexa turn on/off the lights”. Although I get the occasional and infuriating (depending on the internet) “Closet lights isn’t responding please check its network connection and power supply”, the ease of use is amazing. When I am running late to school, if I don't remember if I turned off the lights, I check my phone and turn them off. In the morning, the light switch and remote are both too far away for my tired body. Instead, I say “Alexa turn on the lights”. Suddenly, I am blinded and ready to yell at Alexa to turn the lights off so I can rest for a few more minutes. I typically have the lights turn on slowly because being flashbanged so early in the morning is not the best way to wake up. I also create schedules that turn on/off the lights for me. The schedules (like the lights) can be any color and at any speed (slowly on/off or immediately). Sometimes when I know I need to be woken up, I flashbang myself with a schedule set to turn on the lights to the brightest blue. Although, recently I have been more and more resistant to the sudden bright lights.
When I am gaming, I set mood lighting so that I can perform to the best of my ability (also known as a lack of any skill in gaming). When I am studying I choose the color that matches the tone of the sun for the middle of the day (but in a bluer tone due to personal preference). I have essentially pavloved myself to wake up, go to sleep, game, and do homework using my LED lights. I really love my LED lights and think that everyone can benefit from some smart LED lights.

What are your thoughts?
Technology is amazing! Thats super cool how you can adjust the lights from your phone no matter where you are.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do think this is really innovative and cool, it might be better to start going out into the sun more. The sun helps with your sleep schedule but it also has other health benefits. Using lights to simulate sun when you can open a window seems a little over complicated to me
ReplyDeleteVery convincing! I think I need to buy LEDs now.
ReplyDeleteMake sure they are smart LEDs, many of the benefits I mentioned are only available with this type. Feel free to talk to me in person if you are interested for more information.
