Rebecca Week 1 - Music in Moments

Music is made up of different sound waves performing together. No one cares about that. As people, we enjoy listening to and making music (unless you don’t, then you’re crazy). This is a trait people have shared for around 30,000 years; this number changes depending on the source

According to this article, music can help you relax, be more productive, and even save a life. With apps like Spotify, Youtube, and Apple Music, it’s so easy to have access to music. I listen to music while doing schoolwork, robotics, driving, and almost everything else. As I’m writing this, I am listening to a more upbeat playlist to keep myself on topic. In general, when I write, I listen to my heavier playlist, when I read, I listen to movie soundtracks, and when I study, I listen to Lo-Fi.

I’ve found that music really helps me focus because it serves as a form of non-visual entertainment. With that as my reasoning, you could say I should listen to more podcasts, but they have more of a story that you need to pay attention to. Music can serve as background noise and a motivator.

Even without all the benefits, music is amazing. Within the multiple genres of music, there are countless subgenres to choose from. Depending on your mood, you can change the type of music by a simple search or by creating your own playlists. I have about 30 playlists, of which I only use about 6 now. Over time, music taste can change, but there’s an infinite amount of songs to choose from and relate to.

Music can also be associated with memories. My most outstanding song in this category is Sisters by Steve Vai. Whenever the song is played, I can feel the summer of 2020; for more background, my dad was learning this song while we were stuck quarantined at home. That means he played this almost 24/7 for two months. He’s very good at playing the guitar, but Steve Vai is ridiculous. To this day, if I hear this song, I feel like I’m back in my room playing video games and doing summer work.

Do you have any strong associations or feelings about music?
